Bruno Verdi
The Bruno Verdi Company was founded in Switzerland in 1987. The company had previously existed in Montreal and its artistic activities date back to 1975. It regroups stage professionals, technicians and engineers that are looking to promote culture as a way of life, as a highly-refined and avant-garde form of art. The company has three major areas: music, dance and real-time hypermedia performance.
A Canadian art historian and interdisciplinary artist, Bruno Verdi makes abundant use of concepts from the visual arts world in which he was trained.
For 30 years now, Verdi has been a pioneer at fusing new technology and art. His musical compositions, interactive performances and inventions seek to unite many disciplines into a single global show. Thanks to their uniquely innovative approach, some of his works have had a strong impact on the cultural scene: the critically acclaimed Analogic Dance, Aida 2000, Human Nature, Nicolas de Flue, and Lo Spectro.
The company's versatility, creative originality and high level of professionalism have helped it to win eight international awards in the fields of music, choreography, performance, technological innovation and economics.
Bruno Verdi, art historian, choreographer and artistic engineer, is identified by critics as the "culminating point in the pursuit of innovation" and as a "new wave of modern dance in Switzerland." This polymorphic artist was born in Montreal in 1956. He has a diploma in dance and pursued six years of studies in Art History at the University of Quebec. Currently he is finishing his MBA in interdisciplinary studies in Montreal and preparing theses on dance and new technology.
He taught interdisciplinary studies for ten years at the University of Paris. He has received eight national and international distinctions in the artistic, scientific and economic fields. An artistic director, performer and guest choreographer for many important cultural productions, he is also frequently invited to give conferences, lecture at universities, and serve as a consultant at UNESCO.
As one of Canada's pioneers in dance and new technology, Verdi and his hypermedia concepts have revolutionized the world of choreography. He was the first choreographer in the world to invert the relationship between dance and music. Already in 1983 he was creating his own sonic environments through subtle gestures and movements. At that time, accomplishing international tours with such innovative concepts was quite a crusade! As an artistic engineer, he has invented many musical instruments, computer programs and interactive stage-accessories. For 25 years, he has integrated video, 3-D animation, performance, photography, and installations.
Other than his work with the company, Verdi has published several articles on applications of computer engineering in the arts. His artistic and scientific creations are regularly performed all over the world.
