Céline Boucher
My approach as an artist grows in various ways and is depending on the specifics of a project. The practice is rather interdisciplinary ; installation, performance, vocal exploration, interaction, improvised music and video.
However, I still work with the concepts of silence and noise that I explore from experiences and observed through deafness. This situation can make visible and tangible, by perception, a sense of vulnerability.
A work of light and observation which makes witnessed the commitment of the other in communication. The experience of silence is a material used to highlight links between humans and then between them, their environment.
I like to visualize the sound’s effect from different sonority in my ears.
I build noisy art with day objects to give a chance to people to re-discover the sound of everyday life. I create with the purpose to transform noise in sound for changing the sensitiveness. I want to make people realize they are just lucky to hear.
I like to built interactive art where people can get into and have the possibilities to act the way they feel.
Performance is an art that fits the research project that I developed. For several years, I have made explorations paintings and sculptures to realize that I was still only scratched my remarks. How to express the pleasure of singing if we do not sing? How can we express a voice following the hearing impairment? How to share the anguish of silence and the pleasure of noise? How to make tangible what one does not? How do feel a different perception of silence? How to achieve this utopian dream to be an opera singer?
It follows a first experience with the performative song that I discovered the power of this art. The performance allows me to be a child, a singer, a poet or even a political demands. I can play with my voice, noise, sound and reverb. I can play the music! I do not sing and I do not play music.
I am in a report presence in the centre of improvisation and letting go.
The presence of which I speak here is an entity and it comes from a self-consistency. I am honest because if I fall in a report of seduction and representation. I place myself and intentionally in a situation of vulnerability.
What I do as an artist comes from who I am privileged and exchange with the viewer is an engine powerful enough to constantly want to repeat.
