Harun Farocki’s
IMAGES OF THE WORLD AND THE INSCRIPTION OF WAR
Winner of the German Film Critics Award for best documentary, this is unquestionably one of the most influential, quoted and urgent essay films of the past twenty years. By turns curious and furious, the film examines aerial photographs of Auschwitz taken by American bombers searching for targets like munitions factories and chemical plants used to fuel the Nazi war efforts. Somehow the long, sinewy lines of people huddled before gas chambers went unseen. The photographs were promptly filed away, only to be unearthed thirty years later.

A cunning and subversive portrait of the Army Museum located within the titular gold-domed palace in Paris. Employing what was to become his signature blend of lyricism and horror, Franju deceptively deploys his anti-militarist views into an indictment of the idealization of war, swiftly subverting the pretext of the film.

TIME AND ESSENCE: THE PRESERVED FILMS OF COLEEN FITZGIBBON

The films shown in this programme were made within an intensive period from
1973–75 and demonstrate Fitzgibbon’s meticulous, even mathematical approach to image dissolution and disintegration — a tenet in line with the Minimalism of the day.

This screening is co-presented by the International Experimental Media Congress.
Director Coleen Fitzgibbon will join us to introduce our presentation of these films. The screenings will be followed by a Q&A session.
