Savage Media Society

Savage Media was formed in 1992 to promote, commision and produce interdisciplinarry and environmental art works by professional artists, particularly within the province of BC and the Pacific North West. In its ten year history the society has premiered a number of performances including plays, a radio production, an oratorio, and a series of hybrid arts and ecology productions including the 99 and 2000 Living City Forum, the Gardens of Babylon Balcony Challenge, and the 99, 2000, and 2001 Vancouver Dawn Chorus. In 2003, a co-production with Artspeak gallery called Emergency Measures was conceived to examine fears and assumptions of incapacity brought on by expanding states of emergency. Sculpture, performance and interactive digital media were incorporated in the exhibition. Wear Me! Move Me! is a project developed by acting artistic director Thecla Schiphorst. It consists of a series of workshops bringing together children, teens, and adults with fashion designers, dancers, and media artists in a community-building series of events. These events explore how we can use wearable technology in humane, playful ways that connect children with culture and innovation.

Savage Mecia has produced and presented work by Marie Clements, Beth Carruthers, Veda Hille, DB Boyko, Andreas Kahre, Takeo Yamashiro, Celso Machado, Mark Parlett, Christine Duncan, Sandy Soofield, Monika Lee, Carlos Vela-Martinez, Dick Averns, Sandra Semchuk, Bessie Wapp, Karen Jamieson, Thecla Schiphorst and Canada's poet laureate, George Bowering. Savage Media productions have appeared at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre, the Roundhouse, the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, the Frederic Wood Theatre, and the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Gardens. Savage Media productions have toured and been presented at festivals in British Columbia, the United Statesd, Spain and England.
